The programme was graced by Shri. Y. Kikheto Sema, IAS, Principal Secretary, DEFCC, Government of Nagaland, and Chairman of NSBB, as the Special Guest. In his address, he highlighted the significance of commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) over the past 34 years, emphasizing that conservation is vital for ensuring food and water security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.
He stressed the need to maintain a proper balance between development and conservation, noting that even mindful activities carried out in homes and backyards can contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. He urged the gathering to adopt a “no plastic” approach and avoid practices that negatively impact biodiversity. Calling upon the youth to become ambassadors of nature, he encouraged them to work towards securing a brighter future through Biodiversity Conservation. He also appealed to the School Education Department to incorporate biodiversity-related topics into school curriculum and encouraged churches to motivate congregations to actively participate in biodiversity conservation efforts.
Further, he emphasized that environmental protection can be effectively pursued through the adoption of the four Cs — Cooperation, Coordination, Conference, and Contribution. Expressing concern over the decline in forest cover in Nagaland, he referred to the Forest Report 2019–23, which recorded a loss of 235 sq. km of forest cover. He also spoke about Nagaland’s immense potential as an eco-tourism hotspot, which could become even more promising through the conservation of biodiversity alongside the preservation of the rich Naga culture.
