The Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB), in partnership with Kohima Science College Jotsoma (Autonomous), proudly celebrated National Wildlife Week 2024 under the theme “Wildlife Conservation Through Co-existence.”

The event commenced with a welcome address from Dr. Ruokuovikho, Chairperson of the program who emphasized the importance of recognizing the magnificent creatures that share our planet. He highlighted the crucial roles that wildlife play in maintaining the delicate balance of our ecosystem, from soaring eagles to vibrant aquatic life. “As we celebrate Wildlife Week, let us remember the vital contributions of every species, no matter how small, to the rich tapestry of life surrounding us,” he stated.

Following Dr. Ruokuovikho’s address, Mrs. Katasinliu, Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology, invoked blessings to mark the beginning of the proceedings. The program included a special musical performance by Ms. Amo.

Mr. Supongnukshi, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) and Member Secretary of the NSBB, delivered an insightful talk on “Forestry & Wildlife in Nagaland.” He addressed the challenges of wildlife conservation in the state, particularly the issue of man-animal conflict, and shared successful community participation examples, such as the Amur falcon protection initiative in Pangti village.

Professor Moasangla, Vice Principal of KSCJ, encouraged attendees to become stewards of conservation, advocating for peaceful coexistence with wildlife.

A panel discussion followed, featuring distinguished experts:

  • Mr. Supongnukshi, IFS, CCF & Member Secretary, NSBB
  • Dr. Sevono Seletsu, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), Kohima Division
  • Ms. Luiluile Lungalang, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Kohima Science College

Chaired by Dr. Sevono Seletsu, the panel addressed various topics raised by participants. Queries included the Forest Department’s ban on air-guns, restoring traditional wildlife corridors, and initiating research in wildlife and forestry. The experts emphasized the importance of community awareness, education, and collaboration in conservation efforts.

The session also highlighted crucial step for rescuing distressed wildlife, urging immediate reporting to local forest offices rather than taking independent action.

The event marked a significant step toward raising awareness and fostering collective efforts for wildlife protection and conservation in Nagaland.
